Most states have a National and Festival Holidays Act (or equivalent provisions in their Shops & Establishments and factory rules) that require employers to grant a minimum number of paid holidays each year, including the three national holidays and a set of festival holidays chosen from the state's list.
Employers are generally required to display the list of holidays at the workplace and, in some states, submit it to the labour authorities at the start of the year. Employees required to work on a national or festival holiday are typically entitled to extra wages or a substituted holiday.
